Would you
take 20,000 bitcoins (I have absolutely no idea of what that is worth) for all
your record collection? How about an additional 10,000 bitcoins for all the
books in your library?
There is
constant chatter about ‘what was your favorite record?’ or ‘what was your
favorite book?’ or ‘what was your favorite movie?’
Understand
the psychological blanket of having your favorites surround you to be easily
pulled off the shelf at an instant, but when was the last time you stopped and
removed a vinyl album from the jacket and placed it on a turntable and sat back
and listen to both sides? You may have stumbled over a song from the album on
Spotify to download to your playlist but how about the entire album.
And album
will be remembered by how each song followed the next one. Skipping a song or
repeating it required standing up, picking up the needle and finding the
groove. Even with today’s playlist can be rearranged for your favorites to run
together. Unpopular songs can be deleted and a whole new album is formed.
But the quiz
is about losing all your records and books. Could you survive? Would you kids
approve of not having to deal with all your stuff or would they want your
‘likes’ to be passed down as inheritance?
At some
point you will just view all your precise treasures as just clutter.
While sitting in the wheelchair
commiserating with others about long lost concerts you won’t be able to
remember what Beatle’s album had “Yes It Is” or if “Red Gumbo” was done by
Lowell George or ZZ Top or Lightning Hopkins?
Still, if
you are somewhat sober and lucid, can remember what the White Album meant to
you at the certain time in ’68. The fanatics will remember the difference
between the mono and stereo version of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club
Band’. If you can remember when ‘Free Bird’ changed your life or ‘Stairway to
Heaven’ meant something other than the tribute band attempting to reproduce the
moment on a sea cruise tour, then maybe hang on to the vinyl that is full of
scratches and skips.
You might
not be with the one you loved then, so there will be different memories when
the ancient tracks are played. Some other memories might not be yours so how do
you coop?
In the long
run, your memories are only yours. What made that song important or that book
life changing or that movie influential is only your dream.
Whatever the
answer to the quiz is, you may not be alone. There are no winners.
