Waking Together

There are all sorts of romcoms about sleeping together, but what about waking up together?

Sure there are those wonderful romantic scenes with soft kisses and candlelight until the glaze covers the screen and the image fades to black. There is no tearing of clothing, rolling and tumbling, grunts and moans with the camera constantly fogging up until exhaustion. Cut!

The next morning, as the sun comes up, there is a reality to deal with. Do you remember the name of the person snoring next to you on the pillow? Do you remember how you got here? Do you know where here is?

Rarely do both participants wake together. Someone has to go down the hall for relief during the night.

If you are the first to awaken, do you just lie there until the other starts to stir? Do you wiggle around to wake the other, and then pretend to be sleeping? Do you get up and go into the bathroom to freshen up? Do you brush your teeth and spit mouthwash to rid morning breath? If you comb your hair you won’t have that tousled look. Do you check the wallet to see if it was worth it?

If you wake up and the other person isn’t there, do you wait? You may be just as confused at the outcome of this situation. If this isn’t your bedroom, where are you? Do you wander into the kitchen and prepare breakfast for two? Do you open a bottle of champagne to celebrate a night of l’amore? Do you grab your trousers and look for a way out?

Sleeping together is a ritual. Turning off the lights, fluffing the pillows, pulling up the comfortable and snuggling together. After awhile the process becomes routine.

Until one morning the other person isn’t there anymore.
